42 is primarily a work exploring the creation of abstract algorithmic forms, but it is not without a certain irony, highlighting “geek” culture and its appropriation by the digital economy.
While the allure of electrified light is absent, lacking, it remains latent, potential, a mental projection. The work’s form is another projection, this time volumetric, generated by mathematical logic, referencing artificial intelligence through the number forty-two and Douglas Adams’s answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything:
“Forty-two!” shouted Loonquawl. “And that’s all you’ve got to show us after seven and a half million years of work?” “I’ve checked very carefully,” said the computer, “and that is unquestionably the correct answer.” I think the problem, to be perfectly frank with you, is that you never really grasped the issue.’’
